Most Recent Update, June 3, 2009

This project is the result of hundreds of hours of research in official records, newspapers, printed sources, the Internet and telephone calls over the past three years. In addition to newspaper news stories, obituaries and death notices, the research has included some official records including draft registration records for World War I and World War II enlistment records as well as contacts with surviving family members.

The Ashley County Veterans Memorial on the courthouse lawn contains the names of 37 veterans who died in World War I, 88 soldiers who died in World War II, 15 who died in Korea, eight who died in Vietnam and one that died in the first war with Iraq.

This project includes the names of many more soldiers from Ashley County who died in service to their country, particularly in World War II. While this list may not be complete, it does provide additional information about those who served and did not come home.

Additional information about Ashley County's war fatalities will be posted here as it is received. Anyone who has photos of those listed for which we do not have a photograph is invited to e-mail it to mailto:the_ledger@att.net Please include a telephone contact number. For more information, contact David at 870-853-2424.
