Ashley County Quorum Court voted Tuesday, Oct. 12 to approve a request from Sheriff Tommy Sturgeon that will allow upgrades to the county jail’s Internet system, which will in turn allow inmates to use tablet devices in the facility.

Sturgeon said the tablets would be an upgrade from the current phone calling system the jail has through its provider, City TeleCoin.

In addition to allowing inmates to make calls, the devices will allow them to purchase items through the jail commissary, including media such as books.

Sturgeon said after the meeting that the money for purchases of media such as books will go to the jail.

Having the tablets can also be used to encourage discipline, he said, by telling inmates that they could lose their tablet privileges if they act outside the prison’s guidelines.

In other news, the justices voted to adopt an ordinance that will dedicate $3,600 for repairs to the courtrooms and security desk at the county courthouse.
