The HHS Golf Team recently qualified for the regional tournament. Both the girls team and the guys team placed second overall at the district tournament on Wednesday, September 9, on the Fordyce golf course.
Senior Jordan Gilliam finished first for the Hamburg girls, and sophomore Daniel Foster finished first for the Hamburg boys. Players have to finish in the top three teams or top six individual spots in district to move on to the regional tournament.
Other team members qualifying are seniors, Cody Weatherly, Stephanie Craig, and Farrah Dixon; juniors, Corben Manzella, Michael Kilcrease, Elmaz Bendinelli, and Wesley Crouch. The returning players to the team are Craig, Gilliam, Kilcrease, and Foster. Angie Tubbs is the coach of the team for the second year.
The season began with two matches that were held at Fordyce on August 31 and September 2.
The golf team practices every day after school, and every other time they can, at Pippen Meadows and at the Prairie Country Club.
The team is excited about their success and looking forward to regionals. Bendinelli stated, "This is my first year of golf, and I'm looking forward to regionals and hopefully state." Gilliam agreed, "District is coming up, and I really hope I and the other members of the team do well in the regional tournament and maybe make it to state tournament!"
Regionals will be September 21-23 at the Lake DeGray golf course.
Coach Tubbs is proud of the success at the district tournament, "I am very proud of both the girls and boys golf teams. The boys had tough competition, but they remained confident and played well. We are looking forward to the regional tournament at the DeGray course. These tournaments are good experience for our younger players."
