The Hamburg Lions baseball team fell 12-4 to the Magnolia Panthers on Thursday night.
The Lions were leading 2-0 until the bottom of the second inning when Magnolia took over the lead.
Nigel Lewis was the first batter in Hamburg’s line up and walked on base. Gavin Harrod hit a pop fly to third and reached first on error, but Lewis was thrown out advancing to second.
Drake Rice hit a line drive to right field moving Harrod on around to third and Connor Jones walked on loading the bases.
Harrod was able to steal home on a wild pitch just before Toby Spurlock’s hit to center field was caught for the second out.
Brayden Berry walked on loading the bases again and Dalton Gill hit a single that knocked Rice in for the second run of the game.
Maddox Lackey hit a grounder to short stop for the third out, and the Lions took the field leading 2-0.
Lackey caught the first Magnolia out in left field and Lewis scooped up a grounder on short stop for the second out.
The Panthers did manage to get a runner on base, but Harrod struck out the next batter leaving him stranded.
In the top of the second, Bruin Barnes, Harrod and Rice all hit singles to get on base, but a pop fly catch and double play kept the Lions from adding to their score.
The Lions hit the field, but this time they weren’t able to keep the Panthers from bringing in runs.
Barnes caught the first out in right field, but the next batter hit a double. The next batter was hit by the ball giving the Panthers a runner on first and third. Three walks in a row moved in two runs and a wild pitch brought in the third Magnolia run.
The next Panther hit a double bringing in two more runs followed by a single that brought in a sixth run.
The Lions were able to get a runner out at third and then Lewis threw a batter out from shortstop for the third out bringing the Lions into bat.
In the top of the third, Berry hit a single and was brought around with a walk and a hit by Barnes to give the Lions three total. Lewis walked on loading the bases and the next batter grounded into fielder’s choice bringing the Lions back on the field trailing 6-3.
Magnolia scored three more runs in the bottom of the third making the score 9-3 at the end of the inning.
In the top of the fourth, Jones was able to get across the plate when Berry hit a double, but the Lions weren’t able to score after that.
The final score was 12-4 leaving the Lions 4-6 for the season with one tie.
The Lions played again at home on Monday night, but results were not available at press time.
The Lady Lions softball team lost 13-1 in Magnolia on Thursday with Anna Edwards scoring the only Hamburg run. The Lady Lions also played again Monday.
Both Lion teams will host Star City on Thursday night at 5 p.m.
