The Chess Club members are preparing for the upcoming competitions. The players are Freddy Madero, captain, Drew Allison, captain, Taylor McClain, Caitlin O'Neal, Brandi Sadler, Augustus West, Leona Hicks, Lane Vestal, Christina Patton, Eric Graves and Weston Clark.
The Chess Club meets in the library every Friday during lunch and practices their strategies by playing matches with each other. The students coach each other during practice.
The district tournaments occur during late November. The tournament is a timed competition; each person has 45 minutes to complete an entire game. To advance on to the next level, three out of four of the members must win a match to receive a point. The team that has the most points at the end wins the competition.
Paula Gathings, Nick Adams, and Richard O'Neal are the sponsors for this year's Chess Club.
The members are excited about Chess Club. Freddy Madero said, "I like being in Chess Club; it's fun, and I love to compete." Everyone is hoping to see the Chess Club become a success. Drew Allison said, "The Chess Club is continuously improving. It's a lot of fun, and I like helping other people when they need help." Gathings is excited about this year's chess team. She said, "I'm excited about this year's Chess Club because we have a new co-sponsor and many students that have played during the past years. This group has a lot of potential, and I can't wait to see what they can accomplish."
