This past summer, the 2009-2010 HHS cheerleaders brought home impressive awards from the cheer camp at Louisiana Tech in Ruston.

The squad consists of seniors Stephanie Craig, captain, Caitlin O'Neal, co-captain, Jordan Gillum, co-captain, juniors, Elmaz Bendinelli, Joy McQuay, and sophomores, Aubrey Evans, Anna Lauhon, Charlie Ware, Cheyenne Lauhon, Taylor Armstrong, Mary-Kate Hartley, and Stevi Bolin.

In addition to winning camp champs in extreme routine, being runners-up in cheer, and winning home pom, the routine that the squad practiced and took to camp, the squad received the most prestigious award, the leadership award.

The jump off competition was dominated by Hamburg cheerleaders. The final four contestants were all from Hamburg, Elmaz Bendinelli, Joy McQuay, Anna Lauhon, and Stevi Bolin, with Bolin winning first place.

Five members of the squad, Stephanie Craig, Jordan Gillum, Caitlin O'Neal, Elmaz Bendinelli, and Joy McQuay, tried out for All-American Cheerleader and were chosen based on their performance of a jump, a cheer learned at camp, and a short dance.

The qualifiers will have the opportunity to go on a special event trip this year. Stephanie Craig and Jordan Gillum received applications to try out for the Universal Cheerleaders Association staff next summer.

Captain Craig is proud of the squad's accomplishments, "The squad this year is very talented and each member has a great amount of potential. I am looking forward to a great year."

The cheerleaders work hard to build the Lion spirit. They paint the windows of local businesses, plan the pep rallies, make run-through signs for the football team, and create encouraging signs for all the teachers to hang in their room.

The HHS cheerleaders are sponsored by Michelle Johnson. She is exited for the upcoming year. "I am extremely proud of these cheerleaders, and I am looking forward to a great year."

Jessica Holland and Kiki Atkins, former HHS cheerleaders, were members of the UCA staff.
