Crossett's Girls Beat Hamburg


Ryleigh Holmes had 12 of her 17 points in the final quarter against Crossett this past week.

After opening their season with a pair of wins, against Kilbourne, LA, and then Pulaski Robinson, the Hamburg Lady Lions did not fare so well in their next three games.

Their most recent game was on Thursday night, November 20, when they traveled to Crossett to face the Lady Eagles. Crossett dominated Hamburg for the first three quarters, leading 14-10 at the quarter and 28-12 at the half. Crossett was up by 16 at 33-17 at the end of the third quarter before the Lady Lions mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter. The final score was a seven point, 46-39, Crossett win.

With Hamburg down by 16 at the end of three periods, the final quarter was a Ryleigh Holmes display. She led all scorers for the game with 17 points, and twelve of those came in the final quarter. Hamburg cut the Crossett lead from 16 down to seven with 1:14 left in the game, but Crossett's Shanae Govan hit some crucial free throws in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

Others players scoring for Hamburg were Sade Coleman with seven, Brittney Coleman with five, Jana Bolin and Taylor Reese with three each, Totteana Caldwell with two and Joy McQuay and Liz Pratt with one each.

For Crossett, Shanae Govan was the top scorer with a dozen points. Shaneil People and Cierra Campbell each had ten points with Brittany Bowen scoring five, Kelsey Davis picking up four points and Miranda Daniels scoring two.

The Hamburg girls made 13 of 25 attempts from the free throw line while the Lady Eagles made five of 14 free throw attempts.

In other games in the Pine Bluff Tournament this past week, Hamburg lost to Bryant 55-30 and then Camden Fairview.

In the game with Bryant, Hamburg trailed 14-4 at the quarter and 34-10 at the half. Brittney Coleman led Hamburg with eight points with Sade Coleman adding seven. Totteana Caldwell and Joy McQuay each had six points, and Ryleigh Holmes had three points for the Lady Lions.

In the third game in the Pine Bluff tournament, Hamburg faced the girls from Camden Fairview, the back to back 5A state champs. Hamburg. The score was tied at the half, but Fairview pulled away in the second half to win 68-31.

Taylor Reese led Hamburg with 11 points with Sade Coleman and Holmes adding eight each, Brittney Coleman had four and Joy McQuay had two points.

After the Thanksgiving break this week, the Lady Lions will be back in action on Tuesday, December 2, when the Lake Village team comes to Hamburg to open conference play. Hamburg's girls are now 2-3 on the year.

The Hamburg Lions opened their basketball season with a comparatively easy 52-34 win over the Kilbourne, LA, Hawks in Hamburg on Thursday night, November 13. Hamburg led 13-5 at the quarter and 30-17 at the half. The Lions were up by 16 at 41-25 at the end of the third quarter and then cruised in the final period for the 18 point win.

The Hamburg Lady Lions opened their season with a new coach and a win on Thursday night, November 13, facing the Kilbourne, LA, Lady Hawks. Bert Martin, who has been the senior boys coach for years, also took over the girls this year, and the game Thursday night was the first time in his career he had coached a girls team.
